TANGO GOLF - Cop with a Difference
Allan, Tanya
Description: I’d always wanted to be a cop, so it felt real good to have achieved one of my ambitions. As a young child, I’d formed three ambitions, but I had managed two so far. It hadn’t been easy, as one of the other ambitions was to be a woman. Not hard, you say, to be a female cop. It is very hard when you are born male. Believe me, it was the hardest thing in the world. Then my third ambition was to be a mother. I thought being a girl was hard.

The Sex Gates
Bain, Darrell & Jeanine Berry
Reviewer: Sometime in the future, the Sex Gates appear out of nowhere. Don falls through it accidentally, and comes out the other side as Donna. He (er, she) and his friends, and the world, try to come to terms with the repercussions of the sex gates.
A book about gender swapping. Nothing new in science fiction, but this one is done rather well. The biggest surprise for me was how the future was handled. Much science fiction (especially media based sf) has only a handful of advancements. In this near future world everything is advanced. Internet and TV have combined, people carry personal computers (some of which can be implanted), medicine and minor surgery can be accomplished at home with special kits...there's even beard cloths. Wipe face with it and your beard is gone (God, I wish I had one of those). It's nice to see a future world thought out to such detail, instead of just having faster cars.
They managed to cover a lot in terms of switching genders. After Don falls through the gate, they are back at their home drinking. Don almost drops the bottle of booze because it got heavier. Everything seems bigger when he holds them in his hand. He has trouble walking because his hips are so different (he feels like their unhinged). And he is upset because he needs to go to the bathroom but he doesn't know how. As the title suggests, there is a LOT of sex in this book, almost to the point of being gratuitous. Given the nature of the book, though, it's understandable. My only real complaint is that the writing is not very crisp. It's slow and plodding in places. It's obvious that this was the authors' first attempt at writing. Once you get past that, though, it turns into a pretty good study on how society might react to being able to switch genders (can only do it once though...well, for the most part anyway). It ends with a lot of questions unanswered, many of which are supposed to be covered by the other books in the series. IMHO, this is worth checking out.

Trans-Sister Radio
Bohjalian, Chris A.
From Publishers Weekly
The bestselling author of Midwives and The Law of Similars continues his tradition of incorporating social issues into his moving narratives. Transsexuality goes mainstream in this Scarlet Letter for a softer, gentler but more complicated age. Allison Banks--42 years old, heterosexual, long divorced, mother of a college student and a grade school teacher in a picturesque Vermont village--meets single, attractive, attentive, 35-year-old Dana Stevens when she takes his film class at a nearby college. Early on in the relationship, Dana confesses that he has always believed he was female, though he desires women, too--and he is soon to undergo a long-planned sex change operation. Despite this revelation, and despite her reservations, Allison invites Dana to move in with her, and they have great sex right up until the night before the operation in Colorado, where Allison has loyally accompanied Dana for post-op and moral support. On their return to Vermont, he--now physically and emphatically "she"--continues to share Allison's bed and her house, though nothing can be the same as it was. Allison's ex-husband, Vermont Public Radio president Will, now her good friend, and their daughter, Carly, cope well with the situation, but the close-knit community is less understanding. Questions of what constitutes community tolerance are explored here, but the novel's central focus is on the definition of sex and gender in the characters' personal lives. Allison, Dana, Carly and Will express their views in alternating first person chapters, and transcripts from a fictional NPR All Things Considered series on Dana and her operation provide additional narrative background. Gender is central to who we are, Bohjalian concludes, but not perhaps to who we love. Sex, on the other hand, expresses who we are. Bohjalian's sometimes simplistic characterizations diminish the emotional impact of the novel, and his abundant research on gender dysfunction often gives the book a curiously flat, documentary quality. Nevertheless, Bohjalian humanizes the transsexual community and explains the complexities of sex and gender in an accessible, evenhanded fashion, making a valuable contribution to a dialogue of social and political import. 50,000 first printing; NPR sponsorship; cross-promotion with Vintage publication of The Law of Similars; 15-city author tour. ?Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Identity Matrix
Chalker, Jack L.
Reviewer: If some alien should need your body in which to transport its jellyfish self, don't fight it. Chalker describes these body snatching aliens and also invents another black-budget FBI type organization, the IMC, to combat the aliens. Hoorah! The IMC develops computized techniques for placing one's identity on a matrix-cube for future use. Furthermore, the matrix-cube might be modified to control how a person thinks.
If you can follow and remember the body switching that goes on in this story you are a Chalker fan. The author was obviously just having fun when he switched the identity matrix of his adult lesbian character into the body of a 13 year old Indian gal. Is that child abuse? Obviously carried away by this body-identity switching, Chalker downloads the matrix of a middle age geek professor first into the the body of a young, chic blonde, and then finally replaces the professor's matrix with that of a computer constructed nymphomaniac prostitute/stripper. If only real characters were so easy to construct. I think the story will be easier to follow (swallow) if you read the 8 page report at the end titled Operation Triple Play.

Tips
Cole, Nancy
College is a time of discovery, when students find out just what sort of people they are. This is especially true for Andy Newly, a freshman who has always been fascinated by all things female. The opportunity to delve into the allure of the feminine world comes while working as a waiter in an upscale restaurant. It begins with a bet made among his fellow student co-workers designed to determine who makes more tips, male or female waiters. Though feigning reluctance, Andy accepts the challenge of becoming the test subject. With the help of his friends, Andy is prepared to take on the role of female waitress. In the course of these activities, he finds himself not only enjoying the experience but embracing it, a fact not lost to his more astute friends. Quickly they conclude that there is something more going on than a simple social experiment as Andy, who uses the name Amanda when assuming a female persona, uses the opportunity he has been given to experience the world as a female. In the process, he comes to question not only his gender identity but his sexuality as well. The story follows Andy as he faces ever-increasing challenges and situations as he deals with his sexual identity. This is complicated when a male college student becomes smitten with Amanda.

Eugenides, Jeffrey
From Publishers Weekly
Without a doubt, this audio edition of Eugenides's long-awaited second novel (after The Virgin Suicides) represents an acme of the audiobook genre: the whole equals much more than the sum of its parts. This is simultaneously the tale of a gene passed down through three generations and the story of Calliope Stephanides, the recipient of that gene. Never quite feeling at home in her body, Callie discovered at the age of 14 that she is, in fact, genetically, if not completely anatomically, a boy. From this point on she becomes Cal, and it is Cal, the 41-year-old man, who narrates the story, dipping all the way back in history to the time of his grandparents' incestuous relationship in war-torn Turkey. Tabori's performance of the text is phenomenal. His somewhat high-register, wavering voice, reminiscent of a young Burgess Meredith, is completely convincing as both the young female Callie and the older male Cal. Not only are his interpretations of the characters astonishingly credible, but his internalization of the narrative is nothing short of amazing. Listeners will feel this exhilarating story is being told personally to them for the very first time. Additionally, the intro music at the beginning of each of the 28 sides is different, with each snippet offering a different style of music, reflecting the current timeline and mood of the story. This adds a subtle but wonderful effect.

"The Masqueraders."
Heyer, Georgette
From an Amazon.com Reviewer
This is one of the last Georgette Heyer novels that I got round to reading - it seemed hard to get hold of at local libraries. Having now read it, I can't understand why it is not more popular as I believe it's one of Heyer's better books. Although in some ways it bears similarity to Powder & Patch in terms of language (and I wasn't too keen on that book), the plot is far more enjoyable and twisted.
It helps to know that the two characters we meet at the beginning, Mr Peter Merriott and Miss Kate Merriott, are actually sister and brother in disguise. "Peter" is actually Miss Prudence and her brother, who was involved in the Jacobite rebellion and is therefore in some danger, disguises himself as a woman. Heyer gives us a few clues as to how this is successful - Robin (the brother) is unusually short for a man, it's the era when women painted their faces, he wears tight corsets, but overall this is a slight weakness in the plot, as is the thought that a woman dressed in man's clothes would pass for a man over a period of several weeks. One just glosses over it, however, and enjoys the fun of the masquerade as Prudence, dressed up as Peter Merriott, gets involved in London society and visits Gentlemen's clubs, challenges a man to a duel and finds herself in love with a very tall man who has befriended her - as Peter. Her brother Robin also falls in love with a young lady he rescued and it's the tortuous ways in which the young couple perform their masquerade which adds to the fun. Their father appears who is the mastermind behind their plans, and claims that he is a Viscount; there is much humour in the scenes with him as he is such an egocentric character.
The highlight of the book for me is the interaction between Prudence, disguised as Mr Peter Merriott, and Sir Anthony Fanshawe, with whom she falls in love. These two characters are well-portrayed and come across as well-suited when the final unmasking takes place.
I heartily recommend this book for a great fun read with interesting characters set in a fascinating period of English history.

THE CHANGE
James, Arthur
If you are transgendered, this is a story you might find interesting. The author is a lifetime hetero-crossdresser. The story is written from his perspective of what it would be like to wake up one day and find that he was changing into a woman. This is the story of a man who wakes up one morning to find he has no penis and his trials as he changes slowly into a woman. From the telling of his wife, his family, and then the world about the transformation, the person completes the physical transformation when she becomes romantically involved. Once the physical transformation is complete, she becomes aware of a knowingness within her being that she had not noticed before. Then begins the spiritual transformation that leads her to an understanding of who she really is and why the change took place.

Luna
Peters, Julie Ann
School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-"Yeah, I loved her. I couldn't help it. She was my brother." Regan has always been there for her transgender brother, Liam, sacrificing her needs for his, but when he announces that he is ready to "transition" into Luna permanently, Regan is not sure she can handle the consequences. She has been his confidant all her life, letting Luna dress in her room, buying underwear for her when Liam couldn't, and giving support. However, when the attractive new guy in chemistry class shows an interest in Regan, she wishes her sibling would just go away and give her a chance to live her own life. Liam realizes that in order for his sister to be free, he, too, must free himself to become the woman who lives inside him. Told from Regan's point of view in the present and in flashback, this novel breaks new ground in YA literature with a sensitive and poignant portrayal of a young man's determination to live his true identity and his family's struggle to accept Luna for who she really is.

Myra Breckenridge
Vidal, Gore
Reviewer: The incomparable Gore Vidal wrote this book in the middle of the sexual revolution of the late sixties. He managed to write a book that is a profound statement on the women's movement on the brink of political madness; revealing the madness of patriarchal society during the Vietnam years while it began to embody the intimate criminal mentality of its enemy at the edge of its success. This book is still, more than thirty-five years later, ahead of its time. Myra Breckinridge is a symbol of America at this tumultuous time--a time that has not only not ended but is being ignored for the benefit of going backward to the Commie-hunter fifties culture, where it is seemingly safe from critical scrutiny. The sexuality, the artistry, the marketplace, the spirituality, and the narcissism that goes from the ridiculous to the sublime--defining the time in which is what written--is all here in this novel, in a way that is not only brilliantly entertaining but non-stop funny.

Orlando
Woolf, Virginia
From an Amazon.com Reviewer
In 1928 before everyone else was talking about gender-bending and before the terrific movie with Tilda Swinton, Virginia Woolf wrote her comic masterpiece, a fantastic, fanciful love letter disguised as a biography, to Vita Sackville-West. Orlando enters the book as an Elizabethan nobleman and leaves the book three centuries and one change of gender later as a liberated woman of the 1920s. Along the way this most rambunctious of Woolf's characters engages in sword fights, trades barbs with 18th century wits, has a baby, and drives a car. This is a deliriously written, breathless-making book and a classic both of lesbian literature and the Western canon.
